Schnittke's Piano Quintet


Russian composer Alfred Schnittke (1934-98) is known as a somewhat difficult modernist composer, but his piano quintet is a great discovery for me... it's got simple, almost childish piano themes, underscored with really sinister strings. The naxos CD, pictured above, is excellent.
