This is me singing a song by alt. country singer Justin Rutledge. He has the ability to write lyrics that both sound very classic and very modern at the same time. I like the stuff about "punk rock bands" and the war zones of Jerusalem.
(I'm currently trying to learn to play tunes by ear - usually I'm just playing the chords. It's not something I'm not naturally good at, I'm afraid. So it's difficult. I hoped it would come to me automatically, if I just sang and played a lot of stuff. But no. Apparently I have to actually sit down and slowly play a lot of tunes by ear. I keep hitting the wrong keys. Hopefully I'll improve. until then... it's still just the chords.)
LAY ME DOWN SWEET JESUS
lay me down sweet Jesus, by the trembling skylines
by the fox’s vineyard, by the snowman’s eyes
lay me down by the black boys, lay me down by the blue boys
lay me down in the sweetness of my father’s arms
lay me down sweet Jesus, by the fever of your cold feet
where the soil goes hungry, where the pretty worms hide
lay me down by the highways, by the messianic roadmaps
lay me down in the sweetness of my father’s arms
lay me down sweet Jesus, by the muddy river Jordan
by the teeth of pianos, by the punk rock bands
lay me down by the coffins of the paperboy’s parents
lay me down in the sweetness of my father’s arms
lay me down sweet Jesus, in the holy war zones
by Jerusalem’s cancer, by my baby’s blood
lay me down in the pastures, where your crosses gather
lay me down in the sweetness of my father’s arms
