A discussion about great comic book covers on a Danish comic book board has reminded me how much the majestic "Cerebus: High Society" book cover blew my mind when I first saw it back in the 80's. Click on it here to see it in slightly higher resolution:
While It was most likely planned out by Dave Sim, the actual background art was to a large degree done by Dave Sim's artistic partner Gerhard. There's a web page presenting his art here: http://www.artofgerhard.com/
The image was actually a wrap-around cover, the complete image looked like this:
Note to the uninitiated: Dave Sim's "Cerebus the Aardwark" was one of the great alternative comics of the 80s. However, as the series started to descend completely into obscure philosophical musings, and as Dave Sim's rather peculiar views on women came to the fore, it kinda lost its momentum, and a large percentage of its readers. These days it's more seen as a strange and interesting curio than as a great comic book classic.
Still, that is a great cover image!
