Oh No! He's Murdering the classics part I

The last few months I've been trying to teach myself to sing and play the piano. I was getting tired of being a passive music fan, making arrogant declamations about which music sucks and which music rules. It was starting to dawn to me that maybe it was time to actually try to find out how difficult it is to sing those songs.

So I've been trying. It's not easy. I'm not a natural musician. I'm pretty crap actually. But I AM getting a little better, I think. Maybe one day... like ten or 15 years from now, I'll actually be able to say that I play music, wihtout having to add that "I kinda suck, but it's fun".

Anyway, I did this version of Mercury Rev's classic "Holes" today. It kinda sucks, probably, but yes, it was fun recording it.

(A few bum notes included. No I don't go for perfect takes when I record, these are just rough demos recorded with my web-cam)

Here's me:

And here are the 'Rev doing it live, if you need to clean your ears afterwards:

HOLES

Time, all the long red lines, that take
Control, of all th smokelike streams that flow into yr
Dreams, that big blue open sea, that can't be
Crossed, that can't be climbed, just born
Between, oh th' two white lines, distant gods an' faded
Signs, of all those blinking lites, you had t' pick the one
tonite...

Holes, dug by little moles, angry jealous
Spies, got telephones for eyes, come t' you as
Friends, all those endless ends, that can't be
Tied, oh they make me laugh, an' always make me
Cry, til they drop like flies, an' sink like polished
Stones, of all th' stones i throw, how does that ol' song go
how does that ol' song go

Bands, those funny little plans, that never work quite right

You're off to a good start! And hooray for making music in addition to talking and writing about it.
